Kawasaki is awarded 2 sets of 7000kW Class Gas Turbine for NYC

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) and its U.S. sales affiliate, Kawasaki Gas Turbines-Americas (KGT-A) have received an order for 2 GPB70D units as standby generator sets for a sewage pumping station through Cummins Power Generation. The order was placed by Silverite Construction Company, Inc. for a New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP) project. Delivery to site is scheduled for November 2007, and plant operation is planned for late 2008.

The site of this project is the Manhattan Pumping Station, the largest sewage pump facility in NYC, which transfers wastewater discharged from the southern part of Manhattan to the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant which is located across the East River. This pump station was built in the early1960's. An equipment replacement and capacity expansion project is under way, and the installation of new standby generator sets for the pump station is a part of this project.

Prime contractor of this project is Silverite Construction Company, Inc.. Cummins Power Generation's ( A division of Cummins Inc. ) scope responsibility includes the standby generator sets and they have placed an order for them to KHI & KGT-A. A Distributor Agreement for the Americas is in place between Cummins Power Generation and KHI&KGT-A. And this is the first order awarded through this agreement.

The GPB70D is a 7,000kW class generator set comprising a M7A-02D Gas Turbine Engine developed by KHI. The M7A-02D is an enhancement of the M7A-01. The first installation of an M7A-01 equipped GPB60 was in 1994, and since then variations of the M7A such as Combined Cycle Systems and the Flexible Heat and Power Gas Turbine Cogeneration System utilizing extra steam injected into the gas turbine have been developed. The GPB70Ds to be supplied on this project achieve much lower NOx by using the DLE (Dry Low Emission) specification. Fuel is diesel fuel only.

KHI has installed over 200 units of gas turbines in North, Central and South America for cogeneration and standby use, and there has been one installation of a 7,000kW class gas turbine generator in Mexico. This NYC DEP project is the first order for 7,000kW class generator sets in the United States, and was awarded on the basis of KHI’s experience and technology of gas turbines and the brand strength of Cummins.

Having obtained this order in NYC, the US's largest and most economically successful city, KHI and KGT-A will expand its business focusing on development of the market of generator sets and cogeneration system for all its range of units in the North, Central and South Americas and will expand the relationship between Cummins and KHI. In addition to the Americas, KHI will more actively develop its overseas business in Europe, Southeast Asia and China, by focusing on expansion of sales utilizing the 4 world business centers of KHI.
